New File Naming Convention
Wednesday, March 8th, 2006Dear Listeners,
We would like to apologize in advance for any trouble experienced as a result of the major overhaul of our naming system. After the stark realization that our hybrid naming system based on the Dewey decimal system and the direction of the wind blowing on that particular day was not adequate to bring you the best possible product, we undertook the MAJOR task of renaming and standardizing our naming system. Thank you for your understanding.
We hope that our new naming system will reduce confusion and aid in the organization of our files. The change in file names should not impact your ability to download our daily podcasts. Please note that podcasts that you have already downloaded may appear as new files in iTunes, Yahoo, and various other podcast directories.
Please reference this example:
016_B12_010306_jpod101.mp3
“016″ stands for the 16th podcast that we released
“B12″ stands for the 12th podcast in category B
“010306″ is the date the podcast was released on (MM:DD:YY)
Here’s a list of podcast categories:
B = Beginner Lessons
I = Intermediate Lessons
J = Japanese Culture Classes
N = News
S = Survival Phrases
We KNOW that the new naming convention is an improvement over the old system, and although this may cause inconvenience, in the long run this should work out best for everyone.
All the best,
Tech Team

おはよお ございます
Thanks for your excellent podcast. すごい!
I have started downloading and renaming all the files and had devised a naming system close to yours
May I suggest a few things about the ID3 info you put on your podcast ?
Here is how the podcasts look in my library :
http://galleries.sophie-g.net/images/naming.gif
I start the names with the show ‘absolute number’ so that I can listen to them sequentially. I use the type of lesson as album info (I can listen to all the survival phrases quickly if I magically fly to Japan
). I put the number of the lesson (10 for Beginner lesson 10) in the track numbers.
Thanks again!

As a developer myself, I fully support your move. Being systematic is good for further expansion. Better to do it now than later
Still trying hard to catch up the lessons. Keep up your good work!

Hi,
That’s just a *great* idea, I was getting crazy with the change of naming lately. Thanks!
But (there’s always a but
) how are you going to differenciate the formal and informal mp3’s? Adding a new suffix? Renaming it?

My iTunes looks nothing like what you have shown. How did you manage that?

Gah! Imagine my surprise when all of my JP101 podcasts were doubled! My poor computer freaked out i think. I thought the armadillos attacked my computer
Anyway, the new nameing system is fantabulous. Any thought on adding the album art to the podcasts? I just add it afterword becuas it’s pretty or are you guys working on another one due to the slight

Daniel,
If you have checked for it to download only the lastest podcast you won’t end up with multiple copies on your machine.iTunes will offer you a ‘Get’ on all the newly named files.
If you have download all files checked you will probably have mulitple copies on your machine.
Like Sophie I’ve been renaming my files from the beginning; I’ve also made sveral Playlists: JCC, Intermediate, Lessons, and Survivial.

First, thank you all for the fabulous suggestions, feedback, support and dedication.
Sophie - We are looking into your clever suggestion of better utilizing the Album and Track ID3 tags more effectively. Very soon, you might see both pop up.
Bryan - Best of luck! You will soon find that re-arranging the names of your files is well worth it.
Stephen - I couldn’t have said it better myself.
G - Great question… Yes, informal tracks will have “_informal” suffix. Bonus tracks will have a “_bonus” suffix.

Tech Guy, thanks! You are a magician. Thank you for bringing order to the lotto style system we had implemented (first ball up is….). Although, bookies in England will be upset as I believe the lines on link of the day have offically closed
Keep up the great job!

Tech-guy-san,
The new file naming conventions will be very useful! I have just one idea: when I go back to review the lessons, it’s been helpful to have a key word in the title so that I can quickly tell which lessons I want to review (for example, “tennis” or “specialty”). Would it be too difficult to include this? Or maybe you could put it in the mp3 tag file? Just a thought…

Steve-san,
I’ve edited the info in iTunes. To do this, select a song or podcast, choose “get info” in the file menu (shortcut Ctrl + I or Command + I). In the pop-up, choose the “Info” tab. Edit all you want. You can also select several songs or podcasts and edit some of the fields for all of them.
You can use the “previous” and “next” buttons at the bottom to edit several songs or podcasts in a row.
I also want to apologize for the spelling error in the greeting that started my post. ;(

Hi Brenda,
The decision to move away from using a “keyword” in the name of the file was not easy and resulted from wanting to create a convention that is systemetic and scalable for future expansion. It was more of a technical decision than anything.
Having said, that we will see what we can do to enter a “keyword” in another one of the ID3 tag fields. We do apologize for any inconvenience.

FANTASTIC! Thank you tech team for solving my problem!

Good move!
Do you have a list of the old and the new names side by side? I keep the whole lot of podcasts on my mp3 player and I’d like to keep their names in sync with the new naming scheme, and if I had such a list it would be a lot easier for me to fix the names on my player!
Cheers!

Sander-san: Sorry, as far as I know, we dont have anything like that. (Can Tech Guy-san confirm?)
I guess you have to manually rename or redownload the files. Search google for mass rename or batch rename for some programs to help you (I prefer foobar2000, an mp3 player (www.foobar2000.org) for renaming and retagging mp3 files).

¡Good Work! This change in the naming system is very useful! Now is a little more easier to put in order the lessons! Thanks everyone for the hard work!

I use iTunes, and i find this system better than the old one. I have some problems with the name of the files, because in my iTunes, it’s shows the same program with different names 2 times. But, i just erase all the things that i have, and download them again, and i have them right, right now =)
Thanks for the excelent program. It make my learning soooooooo much easy. No words to apreciate it…
Greetings from Chile…

No worries, Jonas-san, I just downloaded the whole lot again, I’m up-to-date now!
I’m visiting Japan on holiday for the first time in a couple of weeks, and even if I might not pick up too much Japanese from just listening to the podcasts, they surely help to put me in the mood!
Cheers!
